If being a contemporary artist means being preoccupied with the conditions of contemporary life, then in times of uncertainty and change is everybody a contemporary artist? Join curator, designer, and educator Prem Krishnamurthy and artist Roger White as they consider the evolving function of culture-making: as a speculative, reflective, therapeutic, and/or distracting enterprise. Additional topics discussed will include: is all design becoming art? Is all art becoming design? When can we stop saying “you had to see it in person” about works of art we see on the internet?
Roger White works both as a painter and writer, and is also a co-founder of the art journal Paper Monument. White's paintings are about the everyday and the sense of time and space that accompany this domain of experience. He suggests that the images in his paintings are components of an oblique history of the present. The everyday, as a category of experience, appears both fractured by the integration of information technology at the granular level of life, and threatened with extinction by the array of interlocking catastrophes the 21st century has brought. The mundane itself seems to be on the verge of historicization. What can this tell us about how we might live in the future?
Prem Krishnamurthy is a curator, designer, writer, and teacher. He directs the design practice Wkshps and is co-artistic director of FRONT International 2022, the Cleveland triennial of contemporary art. In 2015, he received the Cooper Hewitt’s National Design Award for Communication Design. His experimental, ever-changing book, P!DF, is available online.
