We are proud to invite you next Friday, March 11th, to the opening of "Pedro Reyes. Escultura Social" [Pedro Reyes. Social Sculpture.] at the Contemporary Art Museum of Monterrey (MARCO), which is the most complete individual exhibition of the Mexican artist until now.
This exhibition will feature a vast selection of works, which especially highlights physical, as well as social and relational sculptures that require the spectator's participation. Through this type of actions, the artist has orchestrated multiple experiences involving theatre, psychology, architecture, and writing, that political and social issues to be approached through artistic intervention.
Pedro Reyes's work approaches art's social function and its condition as "useful art". The exhibition titled “Escultura Social” [Social Sculpture] adopts Joseph Beuy’s concept in order to invite the spectator to reflect on the potentialities of art and how one can implement these ideas through direct action. Like on a Möbius strip, both dimensions of the artist’s work create a surface with only one side. One cannot exist without the other, and they are constantly intertwined throughout the exhibition.
Even if they were produced at different moments throughout Reyes's career, the works are organized based on key concepts from his practice that allow us to group them in order to establish fresh dialogues between them.
